This is a collection of images of my final project that was due last Friday, on 12/9/11. The final project was based around the idea of designing an intervention in a space our professor for our design principles class selected. Our building was the Honan-Allston Branch Library of the Boston Public Library, and my space was the front reading room. I decided to create simple towers that could work as bookcases with a bench attached. The everything is derived from something else in the room. The height of the bench is from the height of the short wall bookcases, the height of the towers is from the top trim of the windows, the angles relate to the ceiling of the building, which is an interesting ceiling. The idea for the height comes from the idea that the specific location needed something to fill the high void in the room because the rest of the room was not the same. While I was not required to give a solid purpose to the towers or a material I think it would be best as a sculptural piece for the most with one bookcase/magazine rack on one tower, and the materials would either relate to the building to blend in, or they would be glass towers, almost like crystals and they would be illuminated from the inside.
